What’s on in Durham: Your week in arts and culture

Nero June 2, 2025 3 min read

Those staying in Durham can look forward to another week packed full of fun arts and culture events happening around town.

If you missed last week’s installment of Music Near the Gardens, you can make up for it this Wednesday, June 4. Black Belt Eagle Scout and T. Gold will be performing at 7 p.m. on Duke’s East Campus. Black Belt Eagle Scout is the performing name of Indigenous singer Katherine Paul, who uses alternative rock and indie rock to celebrate her Swinomish heritage. North Carolina born and based, T. Gold is an indie-folk band led by Saman Khoujinian and Gabe Anderson, the founders of Sleepy Cat Records. This week’s performances will again be followed by a free afterparty, taking place at The Pinhook at 9 p.m. and featuring DJs from throughout the Triangle.

Iconic rock band “The Beach Boys” will make a DPAC appearance this Thursday, June 5 at 7:30 p.m as part of their “The Ultimate Sounds of Summer” tour. Make sure to grab your tickets and get ready for a night of California-style rock and surf.

On Saturday, June 7 at 8 p.m. Grammy-winning R&B singer Ledisi will take the stage of DPAC. A singer-songwriter, producer, author and actress, Ledisi has had a storied solo career and has collaborated with stars like Prince, Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan. Her performance is sure to stun the audience.

Comedy fans can look forward to Kevin James’ performance in DPAC on Wednesday, June 4 as part of his tour “Owls Don’t Walk.” Known for his lead roles in comedies “Zookeeper”, “Here Comes The Boom” and the “Paul Blart” franchise, James’ long career of comedy is sure to give him the material and skill to make audiences laugh.

On Wednesday, June 4, as part of its Retro Film Series, the Carolina Theatre is screening Andrew L. Stone’s “The Last Voyage.” This 1960 Oscar-nominated thriller describes the tale of “a married couple whose life is in jeopardy when their cruise ship goes down.” The film was shot on the French “SS Ile de France.” Since the ship was waiting to be scrapped, the film actually partially flooded the cruiseliner, leading to some of the most realistic depictions of cruise liner sinkings ever put to screen.

For those interested in storytelling, The Monti may be the perfect experience. It is an organization that elevates community storytelling by inviting “people from the community to tell personal stories without the use of notes.” This Saturday, June 7, The Monti is making its way to the Carolina Theatre for the next installment of “The Monti: Busted.” At this event, “five storytellers share their personal stories of getting called out, caught red-handed, or exposed in a way they never saw coming.” Both personal and reflective, this event seems like the perfect way to be entertained while preparing yourself to share your own story.

Individuals looking to improve their drawing skills can visit the Golden Belt community this Thursday, June 5 at 7 p.m. for a figure drawing workshop. This “part drawing and part social” event is a way for local artists to collaborate while practicing a vital skill.

The N.C. Official Juneteenth Flag-Raising Ceremony will take place Monday, June 2 at the Durham County Courthouse. This free event is hosted by Spectacular Magazine, the Triangle Cultural Awareness Foundation and Durham County Government. The ceremony “marks the beginning of North Carolina’s month-long celebration of Black freedom and excellence” and “unites civic leaders, cultural contributors, and community members to honor the journey from enslavement to emancipation.”

Whether you’re in the mood for music, comedy or community events, kick off June with this week’s arts and culture events.
